A life-long resident of the Beechworth District, Mrs Lily Anna Sumsion, died at the Ovens District Hospital on March 30, after being in failing health for some time. The eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Hunter, of Whorouly, she was born at Lilydale, and attended school at Whorouly, coming to Beechworth as a young girl. In 1902 she married Mr Frederick Sumsion at the Beechworth Baptist Church. She was always a devoted member of the Baptist Church and at the time of her death was one of its oldest members. Her husband died in 1919. Mr Eric Sumsion, Wodonga, is a son.

The death occurred at the home of her daughter (Mrs E. Smith, Myrtleford) of Mrs Martha Southern, who for 69 years, had lived in the Bowmans' Forest and Myrtleford districts. She was 86 years of age and her whole life was devoted to the interests of her family, of which there were nine of the first marriage and two of the second. Born at Burnley, Mrs Southern arrived in Bowmans' Forest when she was aged 19 years, being one of the pioneers of the district. Her second husband died 18 years ago at the age of 84 years. Members of the family are: Lily (Mrs Sumsion, Beechworth), Ellen (Mrs Pritchard, deceased), Alice (Mrs S. Barker, Wangaratta), Eliza (Mrs Wendt, Murrumbeena), Alexander Hunter (Whorouly East), Elsie (Yerong Creek, NSW), William (Ardlethan, NSW), John (Auckland, NZ), Alfred D. Southern (Gapstead) and Elizabeth (Mrs Marchant, Diggers' Rest). There are 44 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Burial took place at Myrtleford. Rev. Canon F. Wray officiating at the graveside.
