Death of Mr. John Hunter, Chaplain of Smithston
Mr. John Hunter, who for over a quarter of a century acted as chaplain in connection with Greenock Poorhouse, died at Smithston on Monday evening. The deceased gentleman, who succeeded in passing through life unostentatiously, has left behind him a worthy record of good deeds and a noble Christian character. Mr Hunter was a native of Greenock, having been born and brought up in Cartsdyke, where he served his apprenticeship as a tanner. At this business he worked for some time, but comparatively early in life he became deeply occupied with religious subjects, and was let to think of devoting himself to missionary effort. He was successful in receiving an appointment to a mission station in Edinburgh in which he laboured for twelve years with great acceptance. At the beginning of the year 1858 the Greenock Parochial Board decided to engage a chaplain for their indoor poor, and from amongst a large number of candidates Mr Hunter was unanimously chosen. During his long occupancy of this post Mr Hunter commended himself to the respect and esteem of each successive Committee, and he very soon attached to himself the inmates of the Poorhouse, young and old. On his appointment he came with the reputation of being a singularly pure and good man, and this is the reputation which now remains after his death. By means of his ministrations amongst the poor, he was enabled to cheer many a downcast heart over whom unhappy circumstances had cast a gloom and sometimes even a despair; and at the beds of the sick or dying he was a true comforter and disciple of his divine Master. Mr Hunter was little publicly known, but his circle of private friends was very wide, and his death has been the occasion of a great and sincere regret. His wife predeceased him by several years.
