Born: 25 Sep 1904 - South Bunbury, Western Australia, Australia 696,1134
   Christened:
Died: 12 Aug 1999 - Echuca, Victoria, Australia
Buried: 16 Aug 1999 - Echuca Cemetery, Echuca, Victoria, Australia

       Father: Joshua PICKERSGILL (1860-1935) 29,30
       Mother: Susan GIBSON (1864-1956) 26,30,31,32

     Marriage: 6 Jun 1925 - Bendigo, Victoria, Australia 696

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation 696, 1933 - Echuca, Victoria, Australia

Annie stated that Ted was a sawmill hand at the time of Owen's birth.

• Residence 696, 1933 - Echuca East, Victoria, Australia

41 Leichardt St,

• Interview, 16 May 1998 - Echuca, Victoria, Australia

Notes from a visit with Ted:

Joshua Pickersgill worked at numerous jobs. He was a slaughterman, drove bullocks (to the Colleys Coal mine) and was the boss of a vineyard. When Ted was thinking of moving to Victoria, Joshua was earning 9 bob a day, and Ted was making 5 pound a week. Joshua thought that he was silly leaving that, and told him "You'll never get that money in another job." Ted thought he could get that at any time.

Ted used to shoot ducks and swamp hens from the back porch of the house in Beach Rd, Bunbury. There was a swamp out the back, and they were surrounded by market gardens. There are some nice new units in that position now.

Ted left home at ten to work on a farm (all of the men were at war). He came home for a while then left to work on a saw mill. He also worked in the Lemonade factory in Bunbury when he was a young boy. Ted milled all of the floor boards for the Catholic Cathedral in Bunbury (this is on a hill). Susan did all of the crochet work for the church.

One of Ted's mates from the mill thought that it would be a good idea for them to go to Victoria for a working holiday as there were a lot of saw mills there. So in about 1922 Ted travelled to Victoria from Western Australia by ship,on the 'Hobson's Bay'. (There were a number of these ships owned by Australia-'Hobson's Bay', 'Epson Bay', 'Moreton Bay'). There were a lot of migrants on the ship. The journey to Melbourne took one week.

The day after Ted arrived in Melbourne from WA with his friend Jack Hall they were talking in a pub, and ran into a bloke that used to live next door to Ted in Bunbury, This man was Billy Martin, but he said "Oh no! I don't use that name here!". When he first came to Victoria, Ted worked at a saw mill at Nowa Nowa in Gippsland. They were driven out by the fleas from all of the dogs there. Ted slept in a bunk 9 feet off the floor, but when you touched the ground, your legs were black with fleas.

They heard that there was a new mill opening in Castlemaine, and the bloke who was hiring was from WA, so they thought they'd see if they could get a job there. They travelled to Castlemaine by train, and Ted got a job helping to build the mill, then worked on it until the work ran out.

Annie Foley was living in Castlemaine with her sister and worked as a waitress at the pub. The is where she and Ted met. They got married, and Ted worked in the mill until the work ran out. Then they went to Bendigo to be with Annie's family. Ted was thinking of moving back to Western Australia, but Annie didn't want to be so far away from her family, so she said "There's lot of mills in Echuca". To which Ted replied "So!". so they decided to try their luck there.

Ted and Annie travelled to Echuca in Ted's T-model Ford. They had the mattress in the back. The trip took them nine hours, and it was a terrible journey. The tracks were all a river of mud. They were "pushing the mud ahead of the radiator" for most of the trip.

When they arrived in Echuca only Hare St and High St had cobblestones. The weather was terrible, and the rest of the town was just mud everywhere. They thought "Who would want to live here!"

The stayed at the America Hotel for a few days until they met a Mrs Irish. She sold dried fruit and ran a boarding house. They were a wonderful family. Mrs Irish had a lot of sons, and they ran drays. Mrs Irish said to Ted and Annie "Why are you staying at the pub?" and they moved in with the Irishes. Ted took a walk down to the local mill to ask the boss for a job. He started as a leverman on the bench. he worked there for a few weeks until there was a breakdown with the machinery and the whistle blew. This meant that all of the men had to go home, as the mill had no more work.

Ted thought he'd walk over to the 'Big Mill' to see if the need anyone. 'Skipper' Thompson was the boss at the Murray River Saw Mill (run by Wright, Eden, McCullock & co.). Ted asked Skipper if he needed anyone, and Skipper said "I'd love a benchman Ted" to which Ted replied "That's my job, Skipper!". Skipper said "You can start in the morning."

In Echuca, there was a German fellow who lived across the road. he said to Ted "I hear you're looking to build a house?" Ted replied, "I wanted to buy a house." The man said "You must have a bit of money saved, how much do you have?". Ted said that he had about 500 pounds. The man said "I will build you a house for that, a house you can live in. Don't pay rent." So Ted thought that this was a good idea. The man and his friends were paid 4 pounds a day, and it took them 3 weeks to build the house so that Ted could live in it. The man told Ted that he should keep watering the concrete on the house so that it wouldn't dry out too quickly, and in 60 years it will be really good.

The name of the house in Echuca is Dhura. Ted got this from a book of house names, it is a Maori word meaning "Our Home". Frank build the house next door. All of the studs are four by two redgum.

Ted stopped smoking at age 60, overnight.

Ted owned two T-model Fords and an old Chevrolet.

Joshua Pickersgill was about 75 years old when he died. He hadn't been sick a day in his life, then all of a sudden was taken ill. When they opened him up, they took a tumour out of his bladder the size of two fists together. He was recovering in hospital, and after about a week he was talking about going home, and then suddenly he died.

Walter Pickersgill was a big man, he weighed 22 stone. Uncle Will was a good looking fellow. Uncle George was nicknamed 'Stoney'. Ted has a wedding photo of Auntie Eadie and Uncle Bill Bostock.

One of Amelia's sisters was Lizzie.

There is an island in Queensland called Pickersgill island. There was a shearer there with a large family of all girls.

Uncle George was tall. One of his son's was a bit of a fighter. There was a touring "fighting company" that used to come around to the town, and set up tents and invite all of the local boys to fight their men. The man who ran it was named Sharman. Uncle George's son was so good that he kept beating Sharman's men. So Sharman paid him to stay away.

Ted's brother Walter fought in the First World War ("the 14-18 war"). He met and married a girl in England.

Annie's brother Leo Foley was killed in action in WW1. Annie was very close to him and missed him terribly. Nellie Foley was Annie's sister. Annie's sister Lizzie's husband was Mick Cartwright.

Mavis Littlefair's father (Uncle Henry) lived to the age of 99 and 10 months.

Amelia Anne was called Millie, Ted has a photo of her two boys.

William Gibson used to use a walking stick. Apparently if any of his boys gave him any cheek he would whack them with it. He was a "strict old bugger". When ships came in to Bunbury William Gibson used to take the vegies down to the docks to barter for sugar etc.
