In 1851 71 ticket of leave men arrived in Bunbury. This was just over 14% of the Wellington district's total white population of 501.

5/7/1851
Men were boarded at 3pm.
9 July
Took on '30 boys" at Cowes.
12 July
7 am took on 60 convicts at Portland.
15 July
received 13 convicts to complete the number 302.
17 July
"thro the indulgence of the doctor, several of the convicts got inebriated which caused the sentries to be more vigilant on their post compelled myself to call them to silence twice,......"
21 July
"strict orders from the Doctor, not to allow the seamen to speak to the convicts, and also soldiers,....."
27 July
"Boys attended school, one of the convicts Actg. as schoolmaster."
28 July
Sunday, dead calm 10.30am Divine Service, all dressed in full Regimentals, convicts, all wearing clean shirts, "assembled behind the barricade and those forming the choir were permitted to arrange themselves on the Quarter Deck, having the Fiddler to keep them in nitonation."
31 July
prisoner punished for fighting. Sentenced to 12 hours confinement in a box 5ft9" in height (has a seat in it, but if person is seated when box is closed it is impossible to get up). After that prisoner was released he was replaced by a boy who had struck another boy with a pannickan and used very offensive language he was kept there all night.

"Obliged to go to sleep on deck, thro the Infernal Rats, -Dancing a Polka over me, which is anything but agreeable, particularly where they promenade between the blankets. Oh; how pleasant to feel their icy feet & perhaps a nibble. Lat 7.23 Long 21.43
7 September
Weather quite cold. "Very glad of a comforter and great coat and occasionally a warm at the cook's fire."

Passed the Island of St Paul's.
2 October
"Another prisoner put in Irons, for not answering his name at the evening muster."
4 October
"....all in great spirits. The Rats had a Ball, having discovered a new musical instrument in the shape of a canteen belt, which they'd drag'd about the Deck, the end having on it a buckle rather loose........"
6 October
All the beds on deck in the nettings. The doctor had the prison entirely cleaned out, also the convicts water Breakers, mess kits, bowls etc., made the boys scrub their hammocks.
13 October
96 miles from Swan River, the doctor handed out the Disembarkation Clothing to the convicts: 1 Blue shirt, Fustin Trousers, jacket and waistcoat, Blue cloth cap, 2 handks., 1 pr shoes, 1 pr stockings.
14 October
Rounded Arthurs' Head at 12 midnight and cast anchor opposite Fremantle. 86 days from Plymouth. "a finer passage never was made by any vessel even the sailors acknowledge it was more like a pleasure party altho travelling over the vast expanse of waters."
